Kematian: Gerbang Menuju Dunia Baru

Haidar Bagir

History of Islam in Island Southeast Asia: Malay Literarure from fourteenth to the Nineteenth Centur

An Intellectual History of Islam in Island Southeast Asia:
Malay Literature from the Fourteenth to the Nineteenth Centuries.

Abdul Hadi WM and Harry Aveling.

Soon after its foundation by the Prophet Muhammad, Islam was carried to Island Southeast Asia in the eighth and ninth centuries by Arabic and Persian sailors. It was only after the thirteenth century, however, with the foundation of the joint kingdoms of Samudra and Pasai in North Sumatra, that the religion and its way of life began to take root and eventually to spread throughout the whole region. In his book Risalah (Paris 1893: 230), Ibn Batutah records that in 1363 AD he passed through Sumatra and the king and the nobles were already eager to encourage visiting scholars to teach and debate matters of Muslim religion in the royal palace.

Taufiq Abdullah (2002) divides the intellectual history of Islam in “Nusantara” (the convenient Indonesian term for Island Southeast Asia) between the 13th and 19th centuries into three phases. The first was a period of setting foundations, of establishing a local Islam within the broader framework of cosmopolitan Islam, and was especially centered around Samudra-Pasai. The basic Muslim sciences were studied – Scriptural exegesis and the traditions concerning the prophet (the hadith), Doctrine and Theology, Law, Mysticism, as well as such fields as Logic, Grammar, Astronomy, Medicine etc. But there was also the creation of an indigenous intellectual, historical and poetic tradition, under the influence of Arabic and Persian texts which were studied locally (Ismail Hamid 1983: 2).

APOKALIPTISISME DAN TEOKRASI AMERIKA

Abdul Hadi W. M.
